Sandra Schiess named chief of Independence F.D.

Sandra Schiess, who had been serving as interim chief for the past seven months, was named fire chief for Independence, Missouri, in early July, 2005.

Schiess, who is 47, was one of the first female career firefighters in the country when she was hired by the Columbia, Missouri, Fire Department in 1978. She joined the 174-person Independence FD as assistant chief in 2000.

Chief Schiess is a recent graduate of Harvard University's program for senior executives in state and local government at the John F. Kennedy School of Government. She is a long-time member of WFS.
