Ellen Emes Schlegel

Contra Costa, California, firefighter Ellen Emes Schlegel died on December 19. She was 41.

Schlegel had been an outstanding gymnast in high school, and later became an avid runner. At the time she decided to become a firefighter, in 2000, she had been working for the Contra Costa Superior Courts, and at the same time raising three daughters: Angela, Madeline, and Edelle. She graduated from the Contra Costa District Fire Academy in April of 2002 and was assigned to Station 87 in Pittsburg.

She is survived by her daughters, her parents, two brothers, and two sisters. Her obituary in the Contra Costa Times said, “Ellen's fun loving, spontaneous, optimistic, strong, hard working and ambitious attitude toward life will be remembered and cherished by all who knew her.“
