Update on Lansing fire lieutenant

4/20/05 update:

Lieutenant Marie Rosicky's family has released some details of her recovery. The Lansing Fire Department lieutenant has been in the hospital for two months after suffering serious injuries while battling a house fire.

The family says Rosicky is making excellent progress towards recovery and should be released from the University of Michigan Hospital in about a month. Rosicky has had 11 surgeries so far, and has received more than 30 units of blood.

The Michigan Professional Firefighters Union has organized a blood drive for her. To help, call the Red Cross at (800) 448-3543 and ask for information about specal collections.

Original information:

Lansing, Michigan, Fire Lieutenant Marie Rosicky was severely burned in a house fire on February 21. Rosicky, a 14-year veteran of the fire service, was on the first-in company arriving at a residence with a fully-involved basement fire. During the fire attack, Rosicky fell through the first floor to chest level; she was able to hold onto her partner, Wesley Demps, who kept her from falling through to the fire below.

The rapid intervention team was immediately activated and was able to pull Rosicky out in less than a minute. She reportedly received second- and third-degree burns to 50% of her body. She was taken to a local trauma center, and then flown to the burn unit at the University of Michigan Hospital. As of February 26, she remained in serious condition.

Rosicky is a long-time WFS member, having first joined the organization in 1993. She attended last year’s Leadership Training Seminar in Miami Beach.
