"Women of the LAFD" Silver Anniversary Celebration

A gala event was held on April 2, 2004, to honor 25 years of women’s work on the Los Angeles City Fire Department.

In 1978, the LAFD hired its first sworn women as paramedics who worked alongside firefighters. Opening the door as paramedics were Sally Bryne (Finney), Suzanne Ibers (Trousseau) and Carlesta Johnson (Wells). In 1983, Joanne Cameron (Gove) and Julie Gardner (Bender) were hired as the first two women firefighters, breaking ground for all future women to follow.

The Sirens Professional Association of Fire Service Women, the Affirmative Action Association of Women (AAAW), and the Los Angeles Fire Department hosted the event, which was attended by more than 200 people.
