Aletha Faye Nixon

Asbury, Alabama, Firefighter Aletha Faye Nixon was killed on July 26, 2006, when the tanker in which she was riding ran off a bridge. Three other firefighters were injured, and two remain in critical condition.

According to news accounts, the tanker went 40 feet down an embankment and rolled over. Nixon, who was 17, was pronounced dead at the scene. Firefighter Chris Graves was in critical condition at Huntsville Hospital, and Chris Nixon (Aletha's brother) was in critical condition at the University of Alabama-Birmingham Burn Center.

The Asbury Volunteer Fire Department has approximately 20 members and is located in northeastern Alabama.
