Kim Paswaters

Female firefighter murdered; male firefighter arrested

Volunteer firefighter Kim Paswaters, 34, was shot and killed Saturday evening, January 6, 2001, outside her fire station in Campbellsport, Wisconsin. Another volunteer firefighter, whom Paswaters had previously dated and then broken up with, was arrested a short time later in connection with her death.

According to newspaper accounts, Paswaters had met her ex-boyfriend's brother (also a firefighter) at the firehouse to talk about the relationship. The suspect apparently listened in on the conversation and then emerged to shoot Paswater five times in what sheriffs called an "ambush-style" attack. She was transported to St. Agnes Hospital in Fond du Lac, where she was pronounced dead. She leaves four children.

The brother later told sheriff's department officials that the suspect had asked him to meet with Paswaters. It was unclear whether the brother knew the the suspect would also be at the firehouse.

[Note: The ex-boyfriend was later convicted of Paswaters’ murder.]
