Iowa volunteer firefighter Dixie Speckelberg was helping the victims of a motor vehicle crash on December 18, 2003, when she started having chest pains. She collapsed at the scene and was taken to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Speckelberg, who was 60, was a member of Lovilla Fire & Rescue in Hamilton, Iowa. She had been in the fire service for twenty years.
